School education in Portugal. At what age do children start school in Portugal?
In Portugal, children go to school at the age of six. Schooling is compulsory here. All children should receive free schooling: it does not matter if they are here legally or illegally.
Are there any restrictions?
To go to the first grade, children must be 6 years old by September 15th, if the school does not have enough places. If there are places available, the child can go if he/she is 5 years old but must be 6 years old by the end of the calendar year.
What documents do I need to prepare?
The following documents must be prepared for your child’s school enrollment:
- child and parents’ passports;
- home or school leaving certificate;
- inoculation certificate;
- must have a translated tax number;
- the 3×4 photo for the file;
- certifying evidence of address.
Where and how do I get documents that prove your address?
You have to go to your place of residence to obtain the documents proving your address.
You should bring with you:
- the rental contract;
- passport or ID;
- tax number;
- 350 euros for the fee.
Are there any restrictions on the choice of schools?
If it concerns public schools, of course, there are. It is your residency document that will determine which school your child will attend. If there are no vacancies in the nearest school, the child will be assigned to another one.
