The general framework on which the system is based is defined by the Law on the General Foundations of the Social Security System (Lei n.º 4/2007, de 16 de janeiro), as well as private initiatives with similar objectives.

Other, equally important, principles of the social insurance system, history and programs, and benefits can be found on the website of the Social Security Institute.
